The File Manager is a plug-in to the very popular. The plug-in is part of the package you get when subscribing.
JCE itself is free, but the File Manager, Media Manager, Image Manager Extended and some other plug-ins are paid. In my opinion, these plug-ins are well worth the, which is starting at $30 for a year (renewals from $20/year).
This is how you insert a PDF file into a Joomla article with JCE: 1. Create a new article and a text. Select the text and click the 'Insert / edit File' button 2. You will see the File Manager window. Select the folder you want to upload your file to (or create it using the 'New Folder' button). Then, click the 'Upload file' button. You will see the upload window.
Click 'Browse' and select the file from your harddisk. If you're using Firefox, you can drag and drop the file into the upload window.
You can add as many files as you want to in this step. If you try to upload a file that is bigger than 1024 Kb, you will get an error message like this: 5.
To adjust the file size allowed, go to JCE Administration - Profiles - The profile you are using (normally 'Default'). Then click the'Plugin Parameters' tab at the top and the 'File Manager' tab on the left. You can now see your server's max upload size and adjust the allowed size.
In the below example I've set it to 5 Mb (5000 Kb). Go back to your article and try to upload again. You should now see the file(s) in the upload window after browsing for them (as long as they are below your set maximum upload size, that is). Click 'Upload'- 7.
The file(s) will upload to the web server 8. When the file(s) are uploaded, close the upload window and you will see the file(s) in the File Manager. You can now adjust the parameters available before you insert the PDF link into the article. As you can see, you can add an icon (will be set automatically according to the file type), a size parameter or the date. You can also adjust the actual anchor text (the link text) from this window as well.
When clicking the document file, you will notice that the File Manager asks you if you want to change the link text to the file name. Sometimes this is a good idea, other times I want to have a more descriptive text as the link. That's really up to you to decide. Click 'Insert' and you will return to the article with the link inserted. In this case, I chose to add the size to the link.
However, if I decide that I don't want it after all, I can remove it directly from the editor. It is actually a normal link, so it behaves exactly the same way as any other link. So, if I remove the size, I get the final PDF link like this: Even though it seems like a lot og steps, once you get the hang of the technique it is really fast to do. And much more efficient than doing it with the Joomla core, which really is a kind of workaround. I hope you've enjoyed these tips and that they will improve the way you work with Joomla.

This is how you insert a PDF file using the Joomla core. For this tutorial, I have used Joomla 1.7. I will assume that you are using a standard installation of Joomla and that you are using the default text editor TinyMCE. If you're using JCE, you can follow most of the procedure even if some of the screens may look a bit different. First, you need to upload the PDF file (or other type of document file) to a folder in the Joomla Media Manager. In Joomla 1.6 and later versions, the Media Manager is found in the Joomla administrator - Content menu - Media Manager.
Joomla Upload Pdf
In Joomla 1.5 it is found in the Joomla administrator - Site menu - Media Manager. You will need to create a folder to contain your PDFs if you don't already have one. I think this is better than putting the files in the root folder (which is /images/ or similar). You can create the folder in the Media Manager window. On the left side of the window you will see the folders in your images root folder, on the right side are the files in those folders, and below are the create folder and upload functions. When you have navigated to your folder, you can upload the file using the 'Start Upload' button (click the 'Browse' button to select your files.
When the file has uploaded, the Media Manager will alert you like this: You will see your uploaded file in the right hand side of the Media Manager: 2. Now, you need to find the exact URL for your uploaded file. Even though the folder structure on the left hand side says 'Media' for the root folder (top level), the actual folder the files are in can be named differently.
Actually, in Joomla 1.6 and later it is called 'images' and resides in the Joomla root folder. So the path to the folder is: In fact, you will see parts of the URL in the text field below the file window. This is the full server URL, though.
So it can be a bit confusing. Nevertheless, the portion (on my server) behind the /www/ is the on I'm after. On your server it might be /publichtml/ or something else. When you want to find the exact path to the image, you need to construct it from the URL to your site, the images folder, your sub folder + the file name. In my case, the file URL will be: Obvious, right? Didn't think so. Actually, I recommend you always test the file URL in your browser before using it further.
When you have verified the URL, copy it to your clipboard or into a text document for later use. You will need it in a minute. Create an article in Joomla in which to place the link. Add a title to the article and save: 4. You should create a text like 'The PDF file' or whatever you would like as your link text.
Select the text and click the link icon in TinyMCE (the standard text editor in Joomla). Now, paste in the link you created earlier (to your PDF file). Click 'Insert'. Finally, the link to the PDF file has been inserted into the article and you can save the article as you normally would. Now, all you have to do is to create a menu item linking to the article and you're all set. You can also check out the tutorial on.
