1976 was the year that California started staggered registrations 1975 stickers had been issued for the calendar year 1975, with no month stickers to go with them In 1976, drivers received month stickers based on the center two characters of their plate In January of 1976, a driver would get an expiration somewhere between July of 1976 and June of 1977 Therefore, only half of California's vehicles got 1976 stickers The system was based on the B and 2 from a type ABC 123 or 123 ABC configuration Thanks to for the information. This type of plate was issued from 1965 according to the ALPCA archives.
The tab was issued in September of 1975 for expiration in September of 1976. The Horseless Carriage plate on the right was issued from 1970 through 1983, and stickered each year of use.
As long as you have the repo title and the 'Certificate of Repossession' (DMV form# REG 119 side A) then it is fairly easy. When a vehicle has been repo'd by the lien holder t hey must fill out a DMV form REG 119 and attach it to a properly signed off title. Now in addition to the title and REG 119 you will need to have a passing somg cert (applies to vehicles four or less model years old) bill of sale between seller and buyer, and all outstanding fees for the vehicle will have to be paid. So to clarify what is needed to transfer a repo title in CA: 1.
Properly signed off title 2. DMV REG 119 form 3. Bill of sale(s) (if transferred more then once may have multiple bill of sales ) 4. Passing Smog Cert. (applies to vehicles four or less model years old)(meaning in 2011 vehicle years 2008-2011 no smog due & in 2012 vehicle years 2009-2012 no smog due) 5.
Pay Fees Due- a) transfer fee $15.00 b) repo fee $18.00 c) taxes (will be based on purchase price of vehicle) d) $19.00 plates e) Renewal Fees if expired or within 30 days of the expiration date. ( if vehicle is expired and the fees are paid within 60 days of the purchase of the vehicle penalties will be waived but in order to avoid any transfer or tax penalty fees need to be paid within 30 days of sale. If surrendering an out of state title post fees within 20 days.) Vehicle Registration Wizards @ www.vehicleregwizards.com.
1998; Photograph courtesy wikipedia.com Luckily, the DMV sensed our plate-boredom, and has begun taking $50 pre-orders for it’s “legacy license plates,” including the yellow-with-black-lettering of the 1956 to 1962 issue years, the-black-with-yellow-lettering of 1963 to 1969, and the blue-with-yellow-lettering of 1969 to 1986. However, the DMV stated that it wouldn’t begin re-making any of the plates until it has received 7,500 pre-orders for each by Jan. Orders for the black plates flooded in, and the DMV’s plate manufacturer is warming its presses. The yellow and blue plates are still in a holding pattern until their order numbers meet the mark.
So, head over to the DMV’s page for information on how to mail in your order.
California License Plate Numbers
Current California license plate The U.S. State of first required its residents to register their in 1905. Registrants had to provide their own for display until 1914, when the state began to supply plates. In 1956, the U.S. States and Canadian provinces came to an agreement with the, the and the that standardized the size for license plates for vehicles (except those for ) at 6 inches (15 cm) in height by 12 inches (30 cm) in width, with standardized mounting holes.
The 1955 (dated 1956) issue was the first California license plate that complied with these standards. License plates are currently issued by the. Contents. Passenger baseplates California alternated issuing single-year and multi-year plates.
1913 to 1962 Some plates were revalidated for multiple years. For example, the 1947-dated plate was revalidated with metal tabs until 1950. Image Year issued Design Serial format Serials issued Notes 1905-12 black on white (and varied) 12345 1 to 90660 A one-time $2.00 fee is paid to register the vehicle, and the motorist must have a license plate made to hang from the rear of the vehicle (front plate also required starting in 1911). These plates were valid from the date of issuance until no longer needed for that car. The seal (disc) that the motorist received from the state with the registration number, along with the license plate(s), was supposed to remain with the vehicle upon transfer to a new owner, but that did not always happen. These early plates were valid through December 31, 1913.

Modern standard issue automobile plates use a 7-digit format with a leading digit that remains constant plus a 6-digit serial starting with AAA000 and ending at ZZZ999. At that point the leading digit increases by one and the series starts over at AAA000. 7ZZZ999 was followed by 8AAA000, and should count up until the 1ABC123 series is exhausted at 9ZZZ999. At that point if the California DMV follows the precedent of reversing serial numbers at exhaustion as it has done since 1963, the next series should be in the 123ABC1 format.

A California car license plate saying ANRCHST (a -speak form of ) from 2006 The use of (YOM) plates is authorized by of the California Motor Vehicle Code. It is a law that allows vintage cars to be registered to use vintage license plates. Any officially manufactured California license plates which were produced prior to 1963 and plates on a currently registered vehicle or trailer of a corresponding model year.
If used on the original plate, a sticker or metal tab that corresponds to the year of the vehicle is required. In July 2009, California extended its YOM program to include passenger vehicles from 1963-1969, and commercial vehicles (pick-ups, etc.) through 1972. Any black-and-gold plate from this era may be used on these vehicles, as long as they are 'clear' with the DMV (i.e., not used, reported stolen, or any records found, for the last 10 years). A valid sticker must be attached to the plate corresponding to the year of the vehicle that is to be registered. As of January 2014, in very rare cases, California has extended custom license plates to exceed 7 digits, all the way up to, but not exceeding, 9 characters.
Terminix employee handbook. However, most plates are limited to 7-and-a-half characters (the half-character is a half-space). In August 2016, California extended the license plate program to include vehicles through the 1980 model year. California Legacy License Plate program The California Legacy License Plate program offers vehicle owners the opportunity to purchase replicas of California license plates similar to those issued in the 1960s. California proposed issuing plates similar to those of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The original plan was to restrict the plate colors to what would have been issued to the vehicle when purchased new. After a few months, the program was opened to all model years.
Only the 1960s (gold on black) plate reached the required 7,500 minimum orders before January 1, 2015. The 1950s (black on gold) and 1970s (gold on blue) plates did not achieve the required 7,500 minimum orders. The plates were issued from late spring through summer 2015 and are still available for order from the DMV website. Additional time is required for personalized plates. References. License Plate Sticker Colors, Part 2: 1978-1997 Over half the jurisdictions in the U.S. And Canada were issuing multi-year baseplates and plate stickers by 1970. By 1982, all states and provinces were following suit.aside from New York and New Jersey, which used windshield stickers instead.
Colorado and Arizona began issuing distinctive stickers to vehicles requiring emissions tests in 1982 and 1988, respectively. Another trend that exploded in this era was the perpetuation of registration systems with expirations staggered throughout the year, described in more depth. Stickers indicating years of issue and primary use (as opposed to dates of expiration) are noted in italics.
